Competitor Benchmarking: How It Works

How EcomIQX benchmarking compares your product content against Google Shopping competitors and how to use the insights.

What Is Competitor Benchmarking?

Competitor benchmarking automatically identifies your Google Shopping competitors for each product and compares your content against theirs. The system analyzes title length, description word count, specification fields, image count, bullet points, and review data.

How It Works

Step 1: Competitor Identification

For each product, EcomIQX queries Google Shopping using the product GTIN or product name. It retrieves the top 5 competing listings.

Step 2: Live Page Scraping

For each competitor listing, the system fetches the live page and extracts: title, description, specs, images, bullet points, reviews.

Step 3: Metric Comparison

Your product is compared against the competitor aggregate. You see your metric vs competitor average, gap percentage, and percentile ranking.

Key Metrics

  • Description word count (optimal: 150-300 words)
  • Specification field count (optimal: 10-15 for most categories)
  • Bullet point presence and count
  • Image count and diversity
  • Review count and rating

Using the Results

Focus on gaps where you are 30%+ below competitor average. Prioritize high-traffic products first. Category-wide gaps (all products thin) are high-impact batch fix opportunities.

Updating Benchmarks

Re-run benchmarking monthly. Competitors change content continuously. Set automatic monthly benchmarking in Settings.
