Agentic Commerce Is Here: Is Your Product Catalog Ready?

AI shopping agents (Google UCP, OpenAI ACP) are reshaping product discovery. Your catalog data drives agent decisions. Learn what makes a catalog AI-ready and how to measure your readiness score.

The Agent-Driven Discovery Revolution

When a buyer asks ChatGPT "recommend me a good trail running shoe under $150 with good ankle support", the discovery path no longer goes through Google Shopping. Instead, an AI agent evaluates product data directly from feeds and listings. It compares options, considers specifications, reads reviews, and recommends the best fit.

Google is rolling out Universal Commerce Platform (UCP). OpenAI is building AI Commerce Platform (ACP). Amazon is enhancing A9 with agentic capabilities. These are live or launching within months.

What Makes a Catalog AI-Ready

Specification Completeness

Agents need full specification data to make comparisons. Missing any specification means the agent cannot cite your product for queries that depend on that spec. If your product lacks width specification, the agent will recommend a competitor that has it.

Attribute Standardization

Agents need standardized values to compare. If one product lists weight as "8.2 oz" and another as "lightweight", the agent cannot reliably compare. Standardized attributes (weight in grams, dimensions in cm) allow comparison.

Structured Data (Schema.org)

Agents prefer machine-readable structured data over prose. Schema.org Product schema with complete specification fields is agent-friendly.

Review and Rating Data

Agents cite review scores when making recommendations. Products with review aggregates are more valuable to agents. Products with reviews get cited 3x more often.

The Content Health Score as AI Readiness Score

  • Score 70-100: AI-ready. Agent will cite your product. High visibility in recommendations.
  • Score 50-69: Partially ready. Agent may cite for some queries but prefers competitors with more complete specs.
  • Score 0-49: Not AI-ready. Agent will skip your product and recommend competitors.

The Timeline to AI Readiness

Most catalogs are 30-45% AI-ready today. Reaching 80%+ takes 3-6 months:

  1. Month 1: Audit. Run enrichment. Gap detection identifies priority work.
  2. Month 2: Rewrite bottom 30%. Implement schema.org on all products.
  3. Month 3: Integrate review data. Standardize attributes. Re-audit.
  4. Month 4-6: Continuous improvement. Monitor agent recommendation trends.

58% of consumers already use AI for product discovery. That will reach 75%+ by end of 2026. The merchants who prepare now will have a massive advantage.
